Bernoulli’s ‘Clone Wars’ contest aims to find best homebrew recipes for Memphis craft beers

March 23, 2015 By: mike Category: Breweries, Competition, Craft beer, Memphis

Bernoulli Brew Works logoSearch the Internet and you can find tons of homebrew recipes that will let you clone well-known craft beers, from Pliny the Elder to Hopslam.

But what about recipes for beers from Memphis craft breweries?

With that in mind, Memphis homebrew shop Bernoulli Brew Werks has announced the Clone Wars homebrew competition, aimed at recreating four Memphis brews: Ghost River Riverbank Red, Wiseacre Ananda IPA, High Cotton ESB and Memphis Made Reverberation Belgian Coffee Stout.

On Sunday, Bernoulli’s Brooks Sease said a fifth beer, from Boscos, is likely being added, though the beer has not been selected.

“There is no guide, no suggested ingredients, no BJCP manual, no limits to your imagination…” according to Bernoulli’s website.

“So get out on the town and hit your taprooms, bars and stores to pick up these great beers so you can begin your research.”

The contest, which is based on a point system, starts in May and continues through September. The brewer with the most points at the end of the competition will be named the “Master of the Memphis Homebrew Galaxy” and will win a 15-gallon stainless steel SS Brewtech conical fermenter valued at $595.

What’s really cool about this competition is that brewers from each Memphis brewery will be judging the entries for their clones. The fee is $20 for the whole series or $8 for one beer entry.

Participants sign up for the competition at Bernoulli’s shop when they get their first ingredients. Bernoulli’s is located at 2881 Poplar Avenue at Chickasaw Crossing.

Memphis’ Ghost River Brewing releases Riverbank Red, 2nd year-round beer, in bottles

September 27, 2014 By: mike Category: Breweries, Craft beer, Distribution, Memphis

Ghost River BrewingGhost River Brewing has started bottling Riverbank Red, the Memphis brewery’s Irish-Style Red Ale.

Riverbank Red joins Golden Ale as Ghost River’s two year-round beers in bottles.

Riverbank Red was formerly called Copperhead Red and was the winner of the 2011 Great American Beer Festival silver medal in the Irish-Style Red Ale category — Ghost River’s first and only medal to date. The beer was originally brewed for the Memphis Redbirds.

The 1887 IPA is Ghost River’s third year-round beer, but it’s only available on draft. Ghost River has been bottling Golden Ale since 2011, when a bottling line was added as part of an expansion.

While it may be a few more weeks until Riverbank Red is widely distributed, the Midtown Cash Saver tweeted Friday that the beer was available at the store’s Madison Growler & Bottle Shop.
