Ghost River 1887 IPA

Memphis’ Ghost River Brewing is making a change in its year-round beer line-up.

Ghost River is dropping its Glacial Pale Ale and replacing it with the 1887 IPA, which was formerly a seasonal beer first brewed in 2010.

“We are excited that the Memphis beer culture now demands hoppier styles, so we can now offer IPA year round,” said head brewer Jimmy Randall.

The “1887″ commemorates the first year that the Memphis Sands Aquifer was tapped.

The beer is Ghost River’s hoppiest. Columbus hops are used for bittering and a mixture of Cascade and Cluster are present in the flavor and aroma additions. Pale ale malt is used for the base, and there’s some C-20 malt added to give it a little extra maltiness, Randall said.

“The final result is a golden colored ale with a nice hoppy nose and plenty of hop flavor and bitterness – right around 65 IBUs,” Randall said.

Ghost River’s year-round line-up now includes the 1887, Golden Ale and 2011 GABF silver medal-winner Copperhead Red.

The 1887 will make its “debut” on Saturday at the sold-out Cooper-Young Regional Beerfest.
