Tap Into the Business of Craft Beer Infographic – An infographic by the team at Kendall College: School of Hospitality Management

Beer is awesome! Craft beer is especially awesome.

More and more people throughout the United States and throughout the world are homebrewing their own beer as well as enjoying locally-made craft beer. Consumers are slowly moving away from the grip of the Big 3 (Bud, Miller, Coors) and enjoying beers that actually taste good. What a concept!

Craft beer is a beverage trend both students and faculty at Kendall College were interested in learning more about. Students along with assistant professors John Laloganes and Phil Mott provided both research and insight into the craft beer industry as a whole.

They researched food pairings, growth numbers along with the number of jobs the craft beer industry generates. The results are this craft beer infographic. Some interesting highlights and findings from their research are highlighted below:

• Students looked into what percentage of consumers are drinking craft beer and found that just over a third of consumers (36%) drink craft beer

• 45% of consumers said that they would be interested in trying more craft beer if they were more educated about it, both the types of craft beer and where to purchase it.

• Younger age groups tend to enjoy craft beer more. 43% of Millenials prefer the taste of craft beer where only 32% of baby boomers enjoy the taste of craft beer.

• In 2007 craft beer sales were 5.7 billion. By 2012 that number doubled to 12 billion. Experts expect that number to triple by 2017 to over 36 billion. That is a huge increase in a short amount of time for the craft beer industry.

• As of 2012 there were 2,204 breweries that were open, which is the highest number since the mid 1880s.

• The craft beer industry in the United States alone generates over 103,585 jobs. The business of craft beer is providing jobs for hard working individuals.

• If your favorite beer is an Irish Red, try pairing with a burger. If you are more of a Brown Ale fan, try pairing it with a grilled cheese and soup.

These numbers show that the craft beer industry is on the rise and here to stay. Enjoy your favorite craft beer and toast a cheers!
