BEER act aims to reduce tax burden on craft brewers

Bipartisianship is alive, insofar as beer is concerned.

Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Mike Crapo (R-Id.) introduced a bill this week that aims to half the sin tax per barrel the feds get to wisk away from our smallest brewers to do with as they see fit. Brewers who produce under 60,000 barrels a year would see their pay-for-play drop from $7 a barrel to $3.50.

Companies who brew between 60,000 and 2 million barrels a year would see have to pay $16 per barrell instead of $18. Read more at boston.com.

Call me a cynic, but I wonder how much this has to do with Boston Beer Company, which is the largest American-owned brewery, and for whom the very definition of craft beer was recently changed.
