Gotta love this press release from Memphis Made Brewing that came over the transom on this April 1 (ahem, April Fool’s Day). The quotes are hilarious.
Memphis Made Brewing and Central BBQ collaborate on uniquely Memphis packaging
In what both companies think is a first, Memphis Made Brewing Co. and Central BBQ are going to package beer in a unique way: in a pig bladder.
“It might seem strange, but some civilizations have been serving wine and other beverages in the skins of animals for centuries.” Drew Barton, head brewer of Memphis Made, said. “We just wanted to do something which is distinctly Memphis and we couldn’t think of anything better than to tap into the city’s deep barbecue talent.”
Naturally, the minds at Memphis Made thought of Central BBQ, one of the city’s best local barbecue restaurants.
“I thought they were a bit strange when they pitched us the idea,” Craig Blondis, co-owner of Central BBQ, said. “However, we tried a few test batches and it worked. Since we don’t really use the pig bladder for much around here, and because we thought it’d save us a lot in glassware, we thought it’d be worth a shot. Also, the local synergies realized through this pairing is a paramount part of our marketing equation to tap into the locavore movement to the utmost.”
The pig bladders have many benefits over traditional glassware such as pints or growlers. First, it reuses something which would be thrown away. Also, they can be reused, as a pig bladder is very flexible and durable.
“Think about it: pigs can eat almost anything,” Blondis said. “This is because of their stomach lining, which is as durable as most commercial plastic.”
This means the pig bladders could also be used instead of a growler, a 64 ounce glass jug which has become popular in Memphis after the opening of the Madison Growler Shop at Cash Saver, the Growler Memphis on South Cooper and a growler-filling station at Whole Foods in East Memphis.
At this time, none of these businesses have agreed to use pig bladders instead of growlers, according to Memphis Made account manager Andy Ashby.
“But we’re working on them,” he said.
