Upcoming beerventures: New Glarus brewery tour and Audacious Beer & Cheese celebration

June 22, 2011 By: grant Category: Breweries, Craft beer, Events, Travelin'

I’m working from Wisconsin for a bit, enjoying a bit cooler weather and the BEER. I’m always a little surprised at the quantity of quality craft brews available here.

We are are going to meet up with a couple friends in Madison tomorrow and head to the New Glarus Brewery and take a self-guided tour, followed by considerable sampling.

Is there anything I should be on the lookout for here, or any specific questions I should try to get answered while I’m there?

After that, on Saturday, we’re headed to the Audacious Beer & Cheese Celebration World’s Greatest Beer and Cheese Tasting, because what’s more Wisconsin than beer and cheese? There are purportedly 99 different brews and a bunch of cheese.

Here’s the line-up; which ones should we make sure we sample?

  1. The Elliot Ness (Vienna) and Edmund Fitzgerald (porter) from Great Lakes Brewing Co. are both very nice (though not Wisconsin beers). I noticed that Lakefront Brewing (from Milwaukee) will be represented there–their beers are good, but it’s even more fun to try them during a brewery tour, which includes (apart from the beer itself) the giant mug that graced the old Milwaukee Brewers stadium.

    • Definitely looking forward to a Lakefront Brewery tour sometime in the future. May not happen on this trip though.

  2. Not sure if it is “in season” but NG Enigma is fantastic. They also usually have some one off batches around. Last year at Great Taste of the Midwest they were serving a lambic-style beer that was easily the best thing I tasted at the festival. Anything they make that spends time in a barrel usually ends up being pretty special.

As far as other WI beers, I’ve really likes O’so Picnic Ants saison the last couple of years.

Since I realize none of those are on the list for the tasting, sohere is what I (personally) wouldn’t miss:

Goose: Pepe Nero, Sofie, and Pere Jacques
3 Floyds – Dark Lord (cliche, but still awesome)
    NG: Belgian Red and Uff-Da
    New Holland: Dragons Milk
Founders: Red Rye, Curmudgeon, Breakfast Stout
Bell’s: Two Hearted (if I’m being completely honest, this is probably my favorite beer fermented only with Sacc.)

Totally jealous, but it is only a couple of months until Great Taste and I’ll get plenty then.

    • I don’t think Bells actually showed up. I had most of those other ones you mentioned though, except maybe the Founders Breakfast Stout. Gotta find my notes. I’ll write it all up this week. It was a pretty cool beer tasting.
