In Belize, try a Belikin Beer

Belikin Beer on the beach

I just got back from a 7-day, Western Caribbean cruise aboard the Carnival Triumph, and the beer selection on the ship left a lot to be desired. Plenty of Bud, Miller and Coors, but no craft beer.

But in Belize, one of our ports of call, I got to try something different: Belikin Beer, brewed by the Belize Brewing Co. Ltd.

Belikin, which comes from the Mayan language and means “Road to the East,” is the leading domestically produced beer brand in Belize.

I had Belikin’s light lager beer, which was easy to drink and refreshing in the warm weather of Central America. A premium lager and a stout beer are also brewed under the Belikin name.

I enjoyed a Belikin beer on Goff’s Caye, a tiny island off the coast of Belize City, where I snorkeled at the Belize Barrier Reef. I then had two more at Mamasitas Bar in Belize’s “tourism village,” which is just eight miles from where Belikin is brewed.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to tour the brewery, but I did check out the Belikin Shop.

  1. Man did I drink a lot of Belikin when we were in Belize! The regular lager and the stout are pretty good. However, the bottles really confused us at first. Very heavy glass re-usable bottles, but only 10oz. They feel like full size bottles (12oz) but seem to disappear faster. Also, the owner of the brewery has the only license to brew beer in the country, not surprisingly he is also a former member of government…

    • I knew I wasn’t drinking that fast, yet my beer disappeared so quickly! It all makes sense now.

I brought one empty bottle home, and, boy, it’s heavy.

  2. Some nice shots! I’d love to use them on my Belikin site. I do love Belize (especially outside of the port) and a lot has to do with the Belikin. I like the stout and the Belikin Premium quite a bit.

  3. BTW, If you’re in Sacramento, stop in and say hello. Hoppy Brewing.

  4. Where is this store, I’m heading down in aug and would love to pick up a coupla items?
